The Architecture Office Almost Nobody Builds

Ten dimensions of the human system decide whether a strategy holds its shape once it leaves the boardroom. Seven voices who have designed, repaired and governed those dimensions from inside the seat.

About this collection

**Strategy is only as durable as the human system asked to carry it.** Every organisation has a layer between the decision and the behaviour. A direction is set at the top, and somewhere between that room and the floor it becomes either a shared instruction or a rumour. That layer is designed deliberately, or it is inherited by accident. Leadership teams tend to find out which one they have in the year the plan changes and the organisation does not move with it. Ten dimensions sit inside that layer: - Whether the organisation can see the capability already in the building. - Whether a successor exists for every critical seat before the seat empties. - Whether leaders are developed or merely trained. - Whether the culture that operates matches the culture that was declared. - Whether people hear the strategy in language they can act on. - Whether the incentives point at the direction the company is now pursuing. - Who holds the right to decide, and how that decision actually gets made. - Whether people can grow without leaving. - Whether the organisation hears what its people are saying while there is still time to use it. - Whether behaviour changes or only the vocabulary does. **Every one of those is a design question. ** In most organisations they are owned by different functions, on different cycles, measured separately, and almost never held as a single system. The result is familiar to anyone who has run a large business: reasonable interventions purchased one at a time, each of them completing successfully, none of them adding up. Organisations that get this right treat the people function as a design office. They bring it into the conversation early enough to shape the plan, they give it authority over what the performance system rewards, and they build capability on a horizon long enough for it to compound. Nobody applauds an architecture. The architecture is what determines whether the launch, the strategy and the restructure are still standing eighteen months later. The seven voices on this page each carry one of those dimensions from practice, and they are curated so that no two of them cover the same ground. Underneath the speakers sits Speak So You Are Heard, the ASB programme that builds the communication infrastructure dimension as a system. Cohorts of ten to twelve people, drawn across levels and functions, run for ten days at thirty minutes a day while working a live organisational challenge. Cohorts run in parallel rather than in sequence, so strategy travels down and ground truth travels up inside the same programme. The strongest participants present their findings back to leadership. A keynote opens the argument in the room. The programme is what keeps working after the room empties.
