When Autonomous Teams Move as One
A group that has decentralised to move faster has done the harder, smarter thing. The advantage that lasts is a strategy every region, department and team can carry in their own words, and a network of people who see clearly across the whole business and bring what they see back to where the strategy is set.
About this collection
**A strategy can be decided in a single room. Executing it is the work of thousands of people who were never in that room.** Decentralising into autonomous teams is a deliberate and effective move. It puts decisions close to the customer and lets capable leaders run. The pressure that comes with it is specific: The same strategy now has to be understood, carried and acted on across many regions, many departments and many kinds of work, and it has to mean the same thing in each of them. Sending a strategy to everyone is straightforward. Having everyone able to act on it, in their own context and their own words, is the real task. For a technology group this plays out sharply. The people closest to the work are often the most capable in the building and the least rehearsed at carrying an argument across a boundary and holding it. Strategy then concentrates in the few who can articulate it, and thins out everywhere else. The skills, certifications and partnerships the strategy actually needs tend to run as a separate exercise rather than following directly from what the strategy demands. There is also the return journey: - External shocks show up at the edges first. - A currency move or a supply delay is felt by the person quoting a client long before it reaches a board pack. - A group moving at pace needs both directions working: strategy travelling out in language teams can own, and ground truth travelling back fast enough to change the decision. Strategy is a living thing rather than a document finished once, and it gets sharper every time the people doing the work are genuinely heard. The voices curated here have each led through some version of this. They are here because they have stood where strategy either becomes coordinated action or fragments into many directions, and can speak to what makes the difference, without presuming to explain a technology business to the people who run one.
