AFRICAN SPEAKER BUREAU | CURATED FOR MTN GROUP

One MTN Does Not Mean One Answer Everywhere.

Ambition 2030 depends on knowing what belongs to the group, what belongs to the country, and how local leaders earn authority when the two pull apart.

MTN is already redesigning its governance architecture to balance group direction with the legal independence of its subsidiaries. That work decides where authority sits. A governance framework can allocate authority. It cannot make that authority legitimate in the eyes of the employees, regulators and communities a country leader answers to. Dr Xolela Mangcu works on that second question. He studies how authority survives when a central purpose has to be carried by people with real local discretion, competing constituencies and different political realities. He is the biographer of Bantu Stephen Biko and Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, is completing a biography of Desmond Mpilo Tutu, and is Professor of Sociology and History at George Washington University. He founded the Steve Biko Foundation and was its first Executive Director. Ralph Mupita and Xolela know each other.

About this collection

MTN opened 2026 by bringing more than 400 senior leaders together under one theme: 3 Platforms, One MTN. Ralph Mupita asked them to work as one MTN in how they set priorities, make decisions and execute. By June the group served 317.7 million customers, and 70.8 million people used Mobile Money every month. One MTN needs one direction. It does not need one answer everywhere. Connectivity, Fintech and Digital Infrastructure face different regulators, competitors and customers, and every operating company answers to its own government, courts and public. The chairman has said the group is still seeking the governance model that suits the group and its subsidiaries. The nation-state programme commits MTN to being a trusted partner of national development priorities while protecting the integrity and independence of the group. Both commitments are right, and they meet in every capital where MTN operates. The framework will say who holds which decision. What it cannot settle on paper is whether a country leader's call will be accepted as legitimate when group direction meets a different political, regulatory or social reality. That is where Ambition 2030 is won or lost, market by market. The same question is arriving in MoMo. As Mobile Money moves into lending, insurance and savings, customers begin trusting a telecommunications company with their financial lives, not only their conversations. MTN has the power to provide those services. Authority to sit inside people's financial lives has to be earned.
