AFRICAN SPEAKER BUREAU | CURATED FOR NEDBANK PERSONAL AND PRIVATE BANKING

7.6 Million Clients. 3.9 Million Who Call Nedbank Their Main Bank.

The distance between those two numbers is built on trust, and trust depends on the judgement of the people who lead the client relationship. Dr Xolela Mangcu works on that judgement with the leaders who carry it.

Ciko, you and Xolela had already begun this conversation before the executive session had to be cancelled. A year into Nedbank's new Personal and Private Banking model, the question has become more pressing. Dr Mangcu has spent three decades studying how leaders act when values pull against each other. He is the biographer of Steve Biko and Nelson Mandela, is completing a biography of Desmond Tutu, and is Professor of Sociology and History at George Washington University. His work treats Africa's great leaders as people who were argued with, overruled and forced to choose, which is exactly the position a business leader occupies when growth, prudence and the client's interest point in different directions.

About this collection

In 2025 Nedbank rebuilt its retail franchise around the client. Personal banking, private banking, wealth management and insurance now sit together in Personal and Private Banking, so that one relationship can serve a person from a first account to a family estate. The early numbers show the scale of what is now in one set of hands: 7.6 million clients, 3.5 million of them digitally active, and 3.2 million active on the Money app. Group headline earnings reached R8.4 billion for the first half of 2026. The number that decides the next phase sits between two of those figures. 3.9 million of the 7.6 million clients have made Nedbank their main bank. A client can open an account on a product. A client moves a salary, a bond and a family's savings on trust. That trust is built in decisions clients rarely see: - When to offer a second product and when to hold back. - When an automated answer is good enough and when a person must look again. - How a private banker, an insurance specialist and a wealth adviser who grew up in different businesses present one face to one family. Nedbank's Intelligent Hyper Automation programme has already unlocked more than R375 million in annualised benefits, which raises the stakes on every one of those calls: the efficiency is real, and so is the question of where human judgement must stay. The group's leadership is also changing shape. Mfundo Nkuhlu retires at the end of 2026 after 22 years, and the Chief Operating Officer role will not be refilled; its responsibilities move across the Group Executive Committee. When a role is discontinued, the knowledge it held has no obvious home. Nedbank's purpose is to use its financial expertise to do good. Each of these choices is a place where that purpose is either kept or quietly traded, one decision at a time.
