Africa Has Something to Teach the World About Justice. It Is Time to Say So in the Room.

The world's public interest law community is convening in Africa for the first time. That is not a courtesy. It is a conversation that requires African leadership at the front of the room, not the back. ASB proposes three African voices for the PILnet Global Forum 2026 whose work sits at the intersection of institutional accountability, civic agency, and the infrastructure of a just society. The PILnet Global Forum has spent nearly two decades convening the world's leading public interest lawyers, civil society advocates, and legal innovators. In November 2026, for the first time in its history, it arrives in Africa. Cape Town will host approximately 300 to 350 practitioners from across jurisdictions, gathered to exchange strategies, build alliances, and advance access to justice as a global practice. That is a significant moment. And it carries a specific obligation: the African voices in that room should not be there to represent a problem. They should be there to represent a way of thinking about solutions that the global legal community has not yet fully absorbed. ASB proposes three speakers whose work connects directly to the Forum's core themes of civic resilience, legal innovation, institutional accountability, and the gap between rights on paper and rights in practice. None of them is a peripheral fit. All three are addressing, in their own lanes, the structural conditions that determine whether justice is a system or a slogan.
