Andrew Wambari Kairu is one of East Africa's most experienced board chairs. As Group Chairman of KCB Group PLC from 2018 to 2023, East Africa's largest bank by asset base, he led the board through the acquisition and integration of National Bank of Kenya, the merger of KCB Rwanda and BPR Rwanda, regional expansion into the DRC via the acquisition of TMB Bank, senior board and CEO-level leadership transitions, and the institutional pressures of a global pandemic. He did not observe these moments from a safe distance. He chaired them. His banking career spans thirty years across Kenya, East Africa, West Africa, and London. He served as COO and Executive Director of Ghana International Bank in London for over a decade, and earlier held senior roles at Commercial Bank of Africa, Standard Chartered Bank, and Citibank, where he was appointed Head of Emerging Markets Financial Institution Business. Andrew holds an MBA-level executive education background including programmes at Wharton Business School and Harvard Business School's Corporate Governance and Board Effectiveness programme. He is now the founder of AWK Capital and active in governance, investment, and strategic advisory work across Sub-Saharan Africa.
