About Claudelle Von Eck
Dr Claudelle von Eck works at the point where formal governance meets the considerably less orderly reality of human behaviour. Her central argument is that institutions can build sophisticated governance frameworks and still produce ethically poor outcomes because no structure can compensate for the maturity, judgement and behaviour of the people exercising power inside it. That argument comes from an unusual combination of research and lived institutional experience. Claudelle spent approximately ten years as Chief Executive Officer of the Institute of Internal Auditors South Africa, leading the professional body for people whose work often requires them to tell organisations what those organisations would rather not hear. Her tenure coincided with some of South Africa’s most difficult years of governance failure and state capture. She became a public advocate for internal auditors confronting corruption, intimidation and weak governance, and experienced personally the consequences that can accompany standing for principle. In October 2022 she joined the board of Eskom Holdings during one of the most intensely scrutinised periods in the organisation’s history. She served until November 2025 and chaired its Human Capital and Remuneration Committee through a period of operational crisis, organisational recovery and continuous public and parliamentary scrutiny. Those years placed her inside decisions where governance could no longer be reduced to codes, processes or technically correct answers. She experienced the ambiguity that emerges when competing interests are legitimate, information is incomplete and every available decision creates consequences for somebody. Claudelle has occupied several seats within the same organisational system: chief executive, board member, remuneration committee chair, audit committee member, governance trainer, executive coach and organisational adviser. She can therefore examine a single institutional problem through formal authority, assurance, culture, incentives, leadership behaviour and the lived experience of the people inside the system. Her academic work provides the intellectual spine beneath this experience. Claudelle holds a doctorate in Leadership in Performance and Change from the University of Johannesburg. Her research into leading people through change and uncertainty identified a persistent difference between how managers assess their own leadership capability and how employees actually experience that leadership. That distinction now runs throughout her work. Leadership, in Claudelle’s view, cannot be understood through intention alone. Culture is produced through what people repeatedly experience. Governance becomes visible when interests collide. Ethics becomes meaningful when the easy answer disappears. Reward systems expose what an organisation genuinely values more accurately than its values statement. Authority is tested by what happens when uncomfortable information reaches the room. Through Brave Inflexions, Claudelle works with boards, executive teams and senior leaders where the visible organisational problem cannot be solved through a technical intervention alone. Her work moves beneath formal structures and presenting symptoms to examine the human and systemic dynamics producing them. She is developing several bodies of intellectual property, including The Transcendental Director and The Leadership Navigation Model, an emerging framework built around four movements: steadying self, sensing reality, sequencing action and sustaining momentum. Her speaking is designed to do more than create an interesting hour. She wants an audience to see something it could not see before about itself, its leadership or the institution it is responsible for. Her own marker of a successful room is not applause. It is the moment the room becomes completely still because people have recognised something they can no longer comfortably ignore. Claudelle speaks to boards, executives, governance professionals, internal auditors, risk and ethics leaders, human-capital executives, public-sector leaders and organisations navigating change, crisis and institutional complexity. Her work ultimately asks one larger question: What becomes possible when power and humanity are no longer treated as opposing forces?
Key message
The quality of governance ultimately depends on the maturity of the human beings inhabiting the framework. Leadership is not what the leader intends. Leadership is what the organisation experiences. Governance competence includes the capacity to walk in the grey without abandoning principle. A governance framework can define roles, authority and processes. It cannot determine how people behave when trust has broken down, information is filtered, interests collide or every available decision carries harm. Boards often misread their own culture before they misread the organisation’s culture. The board’s reaction when difficult information arrives determines whether people will bring difficult information forward the next time. What an organisation rewards is one of the clearest statements of what it truly values. Employees watch what is measured, tolerated and rewarded. The real test of transformation is whether change survives the departure of the people who initiated it. Power and humanity do not need to be opposing forces. Mature leadership requires the ability to exercise authority without becoming blind to its human consequences. Organisations need to examine not only what they achieve, but how the outcome was produced, who benefits, who carries the harm and what future the system is creating.
