About Michael Ikpoki

Michael Ikpoki is a Board Chairman, Non-Executive Director, and Senior Adviser to CEOs, boards, and investors in Africa, drawing on his experience as a multinational business executive who has managed and grown significant telecom businesses in the largest and most competitive markets on the continent. He brings over twenty-five years of experience leading, advising, and overseeing businesses in Africa, including fourteen years in MTN Group across regulatory, commercial, senior management, and country leadership roles. Positions held in MTN Group include General Manager, Regulatory Affairs, Sales Director in MTN Nigeria, CEO of MTN Ghana, and CEO of MTN Nigeria. As CEO, Michael led MTN Ghana and MTN Nigeria through significant growth, market expansion, and change. In Ghana, he led the commercial resurgence of 2011 to 2013 and built the mobile money business into a strategic differentiator and growth engine. In Nigeria, he led a significant business turnaround in 2013 and grew the company into a four billion dollar business, the largest telecom operator in Africa, ranked number one globally for consistency in business performance and shareholder returns by IE Market Research in October 2014. He resigned from MTN in December 2015 and founded Africa Context Advisory Partners in January 2016. Africa Context helps companies and investors evaluate opportunities, enter new markets, strengthen leadership capability, and build sustainable growth platforms across Africa. Michael works with boards, CEOs, executive teams, and investors on market entry, strategy, governance, growth, management oversight, and leadership. He is recognised for combining governance oversight, commercial discipline, and practical operating experience to help organisations grow, navigate complexity, and create long-term value. He has worked with private equity firms, development finance institutions, African holding companies, family offices, and ambitious home-grown African businesses. He serves as a trusted Board Adviser to several companies including Onafriq Group (Africa's largest Digital Payments & Remittances Platform) and Telecel Group (Pan-African Telecom Group). Current Board assignments include serving as Board Chairman of Arnergy Solar Limited which is a high-growth renewable energy business backed by leading International Investors/DFIs and an African PE firm - Breakthrough Energy Ventures (owned by Bill Gates), British International Investment (BII), Norwegian Investment Fund (Norfund), All-On (Shell) and CardinalStone Capital Advisers (CCA); Board Chairman of Onafriq Payments Nigeria Limited - Nigerian subsidiary of Africa's largest digital payments & remittances platform (Onafriq); Independent Non-Executive Director of Unilever Nigeria PLC - Nigerian subsidiary of Global Consumer good giant (Unilever). As pioneer Board Chairman (2020-2023) of i-Fitness Centre Limited, Michael worked with the Founder of the business and CCA to build a strong foundation for what has now become West Africa's largest fitness chain. Michael is also the co-Founder of Amplitude Telecoms Africa - a telecommunications Infrastructure Venture focused on opportunities across Africa. Although Michael still operates as a trusted adviser in his core telecom and ICT space, his advisory experience is industry-agnostic, extending to digital infrastructure, payments, fast-moving consumer goods, and renewable energy. He has curated a mentoring and leadership advisory service for CEOs and senior leaders, and is a sought-after voice speaking to executive leadership teams, investor groups, boards, and select audiences on doing business, leadership, and growth in Africa.

Key message

Africa needs far more large, well run-companies - lasting businesses are built on conviction to a long-term purpose, investment in people and world-class governance and operational structures, not on speed of growth alone. Strong African businesses are built by strong, ethical business leaders. CEOs are Nation-Builders and have a huge influence on the success of the company. CEOs can be better prepared through curated experiential and practical mentoring from seasoned and credible leaders. Commercial excellence alone does not win African markets. The decisive challenge is the environment: managing policy and regulatory risk that can shape or unmake a business. There is no single “Africa strategy.” Each market has its own nuances that must be understood and planned for individually.
